Region should seize Latino health care initiative: Editorial

Greater Springfield and Western Massachusetts have a growing Latino population whose numbers and impact will only become greater in coming years.

Some of the finest and most progressive colleges and universities in the United States are found here. So are some of its top health care facilities.

Why not pro-actively brings these resources together to make the region a Latino health care leader in both employment and care?

Elms College in Chicopee took a step toward that reachable goal with the procurement of a $566,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Nursing Workforce Diversity Grant will help fund the Elms Nurse Scholars Initiative, which will support scholarships and find other ways to reduce the barriers for Latinos and other disadvantaged students who are pursuing the nursing field.
