Hendry Monkey farm condemned by opponents, including Jane Velez-Mitchell

Bioculture, a company blocked by Puerto Rico’s supreme court from building a primate farm there, is now doing business in Hendry County, and residents and animal rights activists are fuming.

At a Tuesday morning press conference, protesters and independent journalist Jane Velez-Mitchell railedagainst the rural county’s burgeoning monkey industry, demanding a freeze on primate imports to the region and a moratorium on further construction of such facilities.

The sparsely attended event was to call attention to Bioculture’s new monkey breeding facility near Immokalee. Built on what’s called Panther Tracts, the 640-acre property is already home to Primate Products, which has operated there since 1990.
