Feminists back lesbian to lead P.R. Supreme Court :: La Prensa :: America in English

San Juan, Feb 22 (EFE).- The Puerto Rico Women’s Movement on Monday backed the nomination of openly lesbian jurist Maite Oronoz Rodriguez to head the island’s Supreme Court.

“We’re alert to (ensuring) that sexist and sexual orientation prejudices do not enter into her confirmation process,” said the organization’s president, Eva Prados Rodriguez.

In a communique, Prados added that the legislative debate on Oronoz’s confirmation should focus on “her academic preparation, experience and record as a judge, and (should be) free of all prejudice and stereotyping linked to her sexual orientation.”

The judge was nominated for the high court on Feb. 12 by Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla. Her designation now must be approved by Puerto Rico’s Senate and lower house.

If she is confirmed, Oronoz would be the third woman to serve on Puerto Rico’s Supreme Court, after Miriam Naveira Merly and the outgoing Liana Fiol Matta.

In like manner, the feminist group took advantage of the occasion to urge Oronoz, as the high court’s presiding justice, to work for gender equity in the judiciary.
