PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Dozens of people crowded a hearing Thursday on Senate bills to extend driver’s licenses and other protections to undocumented immigrants. If a driver’s-license bill passes, Rhode Island would join 10 other states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico in extending that privilege.
Several people became emotional as they described their fear of being caught driving without a license.
“My driver’s license expired today,” said a woman who said she is a stay-at-home mom. “I’m very scared … I do jewelry work. If I could renew my driver’s license, I could have a different kind of work. It would be a great relief for me and my family, for my kids, and for the safety of people.”
