The Best Places to Shop in the Caribbean

eople experience the Caribbean through several prisms: food, nature, rum, and beaches, to name a few. But my experience of a given destination revolves around its “shopportunities,” authentic local art, craft and design that I just have to have. Buying a handmade bag or a bottle of banana ketchup is my way of taking home a piece of an island, a tangible reminder of not only a good time but also of the true color and culture of a country. I don’t think I’ve been anywhere that I couldn’t ferret out a good find, but for goodies guaranteed to please, here are my top Caribbean shopping spots.

Bringing Hispanic Heritage to American Fashion: Designer Stella Nolasco Showcases Puerto Rico on The Runway : Style : Latin Post

Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the traditions, people and history of Latin American nations and on Sept. 16, while New York Fashion Week was in full swing, Puerto Rican designer Stella Nolasco did just that on a runway in studio 59 in Chelsea Piers. As Nolasco premiered her second NYFW collection guests got a taste of la Isla del encanto (the island of dreams).

Nolasco, a freshman in the fashion world, was only one of several Latinos showing at NYFW. Venezuelan's Angel Sanchez and Carolina Herrera, Cuban-American Narciso Rodriguez, Brazilian Francisco Costa, who presented his latest Calvin Klein collection, Mexican Gregorio Sanchez, Ecuadorians Gabriela Cadena and Christina Ruales and Lazaro Hernandez, the Cuban-American half of the duo behind Proenza Schouler, all presented new collections.
